I am a licensed psychologist, an entrepreneur, and I must say that I love what I do!
I took a circuitous route to get here, however… I began by studying chemistry and computer programming and soon decided that that was not my calling. Computers don’t converse with you (at least they didn’t when I was working with them). So, I chose to move on to study psychology and work with children and families after volunteering in a children’s crisis center in Denver, CO.
In 2002, I established Minisink Psychology & Psychotherapy . We are a group of psychologists, mental health counselors, and social workers dedicated to providing effective, researched, and solution-focused therapeutic services. Our goals are to provide knowledgeable and effective guidance, whether you’re: dealing with long-standing issues, wanting to learn new ways to cope more effectively in the present, interested in learning how to improve your relationships, or needing to learn how to make better choices in life.
So, a little about how I work…
I would best describe myself as a therapist and guide interested in both working through present issues, as well as understanding any underlying roots, patterns, and themes. I believe that armed with this knowledge, people can attain more control over their lives, choices, difficulties, struggles, and strengths. In a comfortable and supportive atmosphere, I offer a highly personalized approach tailored to each individual to help them attain the peace, constructive growth, and goals they’re striving for. I work with children, adolescents, adults, parents and families and incorporate my treatment approach accordingly.
I have recently completed a 16-month intensive training program in DBT through Behavioral Tech and can truthfully say that I’m an intensively trained DBT therapist. Combining training and experience in both DBT and CBT, it is my belief that a combination of understanding emotions, thoughts and our internal belief system is vital to learning new ways to think, choose, and behave in the present. Therefore, I access the training I have had in CBT and DBT when working with my clients. Within this framework, I am an interactive, solution-focused therapist.
Lastly, I have personally discovered the power of faith and how this belief can overlay what I have learned from psychodynamic theory and practice, CBT and DBT. Faith is like an umbrella. For those clients who want to bring faith into their sessions, I attempt to weave together the principles of CBT, DBT skills, and psychodynamic therapy under the eternal umbrella of faith. I have found that faith is something within us… beliefs… thoughts… power… that we can always reach out to and receive support and comfort from. It is a place in our soul. And when we allow ourselves to “go to this place”, we can sit down, relax, take a breath, and rest. It only needs to be a few minutes. From there we can access our Wise Mind, soothe our thoughts and feelings, and then slowly figure out how to move forward. “We Got This”
A belief in a higher power can be a calming and stabilizing influence to help us shift into a rational frame of mind (Wise Mind in DBT terminology). I have also found that much of the wisdom found in the Bible truly does complement the skills and knowledge I have learned from the evidence-based practices such as CBT, DBT skills, and mindfulness techniques. When I go to that place in my soul and access my faith, these are words that I repeat to myself often.
